Australia Imports Hit Record High
Imports to Australia rose 0.4 percent over a month earlier to a record high of AUD 36.25 billion in October 2019. Purchases of consumption goods rose by 4 percent to AUD 9.17 billion, largely due to non-industrial transport equipment (8 percent), food and beverages, mainly for consumption (5 percent) and consumption goods n.e.s. (2 percent). Also, imports of intermediate and other merchandise goods advanced 2 percent to AUD 11.34 billion, driven by fuels and lubricants (6 percent) and other parts for capital goods (6 percent). On the other hand, arrivals of capital goods fell 2 percent to AUD 6.59 billion, due to capital goods n.e.s. (-26 percent) and industrial transport equipment n.e.s. (-8 percent). Also, imports of non-monetary gold slumped 35 percent to AUD 469 million. Additionally, purchases of services fell AUD 40 million to AUD 8.69 billion, mostly led by travel (-1 percent) and other services (-1 percent).

Australia Imports Second-Highest on Record
Imports to Australia increased 3 percent from a month earlier to AUD 36.03 billion in September 2019, the second-highest on record. Purchases of consumption goods rose 1 percent to AUD 8.76 billion, largely due to consumption goods n.e.s (1 percent), non-industrial transport equipment (2 percent), and textiles, clothing and footwear (4 percent). Food and beverages, however, fell 4 percent. Also, imports of capital goods jumped 12 percent to AUD 6.75 billion, mostly driven by telecommunications equipment (10 percent) and capital goods n.e.s (80 percent) while machinery and industrial equipment imports dropped 3 percent. Additionally, purchases of intermediate and other merchandise goods increased 4 percent to AUD 11.06 billion, boosted by fuels and lubricants (8 percent) and processed industrial supplies n.e.s (7 percent). Conversely, purchases of non-monetary gold tumbled 34 percent to AUD 0.73 billion, while those of services were unchanged at AUD 8.74 billion.

Australia Imports Decline 0.4% MoM in August
Imports to Australia fell 0.4 percent over a month earlier to AUD 35.06 billion in August 2019. Purchases of consumption goods fell by 1 percent to AUD 8.70 billion, largely due to consumption goods n.e.s (-1%). Also, imports of capital goods decreased by 2 percent to AUD 6.01 billion, namely machinery and industrial equipment (-5%). Additionally, purchases of intermediate and other merchandise goods shrank by 4 percent to AUD 10.60 billion, weighed down by fuels and lubricants (-7%) and processed industrial supplies n.e.s (-4%). On the other hand, purchases of non-monetary gold surged 40 percent to AUD 1.1 billion, and those of services expanded 2 percent, boosted by maintenance and repair services n.i.e, which up AUD 119 million and travel (1%).

Australia Imports Soar 3% MoM in July
Imports to Australia rose 3 percent month-over-month to AUD 35.27 billion in July 2019. Purchases of consumption goods rose by 4 percent to AUD 8.78 billion, largely due to non-industrial transport equipment (14 percent). In addition, imports of intermediate and other merchandise goods went up by 5 percent to AUD 11.16 billion, mainly boosted by fuels and lubricants (14 percent). Also, imports of non-monetary gold soared 29 percent to AUD 787 million. On the other hand, purchases of capital goods fell 1 percent to AUD 6.11 billion, largely due to civil aircraft and confidentialised items (-36 percent) and capital goods n.e.s (-15 percent). Additionally, imports of services fell by AUD 30 million to AUD 8.43 billion, led by maintenance and repair services n.i.e (-30 percent) and transport (-1 percent).

Australia Imports Slump in June
Imports to Australia dropped 4 percent from a month earlier to AUD 34.34 billion in June 2019. Purchases of capital goods tumbled 9 percent to AUD 6.29 billion, in particular machinery and industrial equipment (-5 percent), telecommunications equipment (-9 percent), and industrial transport equipment n.e.s (-18 percent). Also, purchases of consumption goods declined 5 percent to AUD 8.35 billion, due to non-industrial transport equipment (-13 percent), consumption goods n.e.s (-6 percent); and imports of intermediate goods and other merchandise goods fell 3 percent to AUD 10.62 billion, mainly dragged down by fuels and lubricants (-11 percent) and parts for transport equipment (-4 percent). By contrast, purchases of non-monetary gold jumped 28 percent to AUD 610 million. Imports of services were little-changed to AUD 8.48 billion.

Australia Imports Rise 2% MoM in May
Imports to Australia increased 2 percent month-over-month to AUD 35.84 billion in May 2019. Purchases of capital goods advanced 5 percent to AUD 7.0 billion, namely civil aircraft and confidentialised items (67 percent), machinery and industrial equipment (5 percent), and telecommunications equipment (6 percent). In addition, imports of intermediate goods and other merchandise goods grew 1 percent to AUD 11.19 billion, mainly driven by fuels and lubricants (8 percent). Also, purchases of non-monetary gold surged 17 percent to AUD 478 million, and that of services went up 1 percent to AUD 8.34 billion, mostly led by maintenance and repair services n.i.e. (64 percent), and transport (2 percent). Conversely, imports of consumption goods dropped 1 percent to AUD 8.87 billion, mainly due to textiles, clothing and footwear (-7%), and non-industrial transport equipment (-3 percent).
